If there is one product that gets the least attention in skincare, it is the toner. Not many men are aware of the importance of a toner and thus do not find it necessary to include it in their daily routine.
A part of the CETM or the Cleanser-Exfoliate-Toner-Moisturizer Routine, toners are essential today when your skin is constantly bombarded with dirt and pollutants every minute of the day. If you want your skin to remain healthy and young, and keep aging signs at bay, then it is time you incorporate toners in your daily schedule.
Any product to be effective, it is necessary to use it the right way. Before knowing the proper ways to use it, let us get to know toner better.
What is a toner?
A toner is a skincare product mainly to help clean your skin. Cleansers also remove dirt and impurities, but a toner helps in removing the last traces of dirt and dead skin cells and also helps to energize the skin. It also cleans and closes pores, thus contributing to a healthier and more younger-looking skin. Toners also help in controlling and preventing acne.
Using a toner for your skin issues
For best results, you need skin-friendly and skin-effective ingredients in your toner. Also, always buy alcohol-free toners. Different skin types have different issues and hence, need specific ingredients.
For example, if wrinkles are your issue, then look for toners with antioxidants. If you have oily skin or if you are struggling with acne, then you need to be careful. Buy ones containing mattifying ingredients as they are soft on your skin and will not irritate it. Salicylic acid is another must-ingredient in your toner because of its potent anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties especially people with problem skin.
Those with dry skin should look for ingredients that will hydrate and calm your skin.
The right time to use a toner
Since the CETM routine is carried out twice a day, you should use toner twice a day. Use it in the morning as well as at night. Daily use of toner will give you a brighter looking and healthier skin.
Here’s How You Should Use A Toner…
A point to remember and follow-through is to apply a moisturizer after using the toner. It helps to maintain hydration of the skin if at all, you have lost any oil content from your skin after cleansing and toning.
Step 1 – Massage your face with a cleanser. Keep it for a couple of minutes. Cover your face, neck region, back of the neck and ears, and also your shoulder.
Step 2 – Rinse your face with lukewarm water, followed by cold water.
Step 3 – Pat dry with a clean cotton cloth.
Step 4 – Spray a little toner on your face and neck, ensure you spray just enough to full coverage of your face and neck.
Step 5 - Use the toner all through your face, sides of the nose, behind the ears, and your shoulder. Avoid eye areas and lips.
Step 6 – Wipe your face and neck region with the damp cotton pad. If it is a liquid toner, moisten a cotton ball with water and then squeeze out excess water. Pour your toner on to the cotton ball. It will ensure that the cotton ball does not absorb too much of the product.
Step 7 – Wait for a couple of minutes. Let the toner dry completely.
Step 8 - Follow up with a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and smooth.
Different toners, different applications
- Toner in a bottle: You should use a cotton pad or cotton ball and pour a little amount on it. Let it get moist and not over-soaked. Start from the center and then go outwards. Do not apply toner on the under-eye region and lips.
- Toner in a spray bottle: Mist it over your face but wipe it off with a cotton ball. The best way is to use mist toner to lend additional moisture. Use it again after you have wiped off the impurities with a cotton pad or ball.
- Toner with spray nozzle: It comes with a misting applicator via which you can apply it directly to the skin.
Multiple uses of a toner
1. Extra hydration
It helps to have two types of toners. One, you can use the usual watery toner after cleansing. Once no impurities are left on the skin, you can use a mist toner to spray on your face for additional hydration. You can also use it to refresh your face when you are outdoors.
You should always carry a mist toner in your bag. Get one with antioxidants and soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, cucumber, etc.
2. Good activators
Some skincare products require you to activate it with water. You can use a toner instead of a better effect. These days powdered form of Vitamin C is very popular as a skincare product. It needs to be activated with water, but if you use a toner instead, you get double the benefits.
3. Refresh under-eye areas
Your eyes get tired fast. The under-eye location is a very delicate region, and you should not be using all the skincare products in the area. Toner as such shouldn’t be applied below your eyes or around it, but if it contains ingredients such as caffeine or cucumber, you can use it. These constituents are soothing and can be excellent to refresh under eye areas. For best results, refrigerate the toner for some time and use it as a cold compress.
In times when pollution and poor lifestyle habits are taking a toll on your health, ageing starts early. Your skin is the one that gets affected fast. A good skincare routine will help your skin fight its daily battles with pollution and insufficient nutrition. A toner is an essential part of such a routine. Make it a part of your schedule, and you will be amazed to see the difference in your skin.
