Every Man's Guide To Choosing The Best Face Wash!

by Rishi Sharma |

If you believe that regular soap or a shower gel are good enough to wash your face with, you are in for a nasty surprise. The truth is - there is nothing more harsh on your skin that the chemicals in the soap or shower gel you are using!

The ingredients used to make soap are meant to clean your body, but not your face. The skin on your face is much more delicate and needs special care. Opting for a face wash is one of the ways to keep it from getting ruined.

Here’s why you should use a face wash…

  • Refreshes your skin.
  • Cleanses deep within the thick epidermis.
  • Helpful for acne.
  • Keeps your skin healthy.
  • Slows down the aging process.

Thankfully, there are many types of face washes for men available in the market. The trick is to find the one that suits your skin type. (Yes, men have a skin type too!)

Choosing the Best Men’s Face Wash Based On Your Skin Type!

If you do not know what your skin type is, take a tissue test! Don’t worry, it does not include a questionnaire, but simply wiping your face! Wash your face with plain water and wait for 5 minutes. Take a tissue and wipe your face with it.

  • If the tissue looks oily, then your skin is oily.
  • If only the T-zone of your face (forehead, nose, and chin) is oily, you have combination skin.
  • You have dry skin if the tissue remains as it is, and your skin feels stretched.
  • Normal skin is neither oily, nor dry.
  • Sensitive skin is sensitive to most products and gets irritated easily.

Let’s take a look at the kind of face wash you should use based on your skin type:

1. Normal

You are lucky if you have normal skin. It means that your skin is virtually problem-free, and all kinds of face wash will suit your skin!

One small tip, though - Opt for a gel-based face wash during the summers and a creamy face wash when it gets chilly, to keep your skin adequately moisturized.

2. Sensitive Skin

If your skin is sensitive, you need to think twice before using any skin product. Invest in a high-quality face wash containing natural and soothing ingredients. Chemical-laden cleansers are a strict no-no. Use a face wash only once a day because over-washing your face can lead to irritation. It’s best to wash your face just before going to bed!

Look for products containing aloe vera gel, olive oil, Vitamin E, coconut oil, witch hazel, or activated charcoal, because they offer the right amount of hydration while removing impurities and dead skin cells. Always try out a sample before buying any skin product. The basic rule is to let your skin be and not irritate it with unsuitable products.

3. Oily Skin

Overproduction of sebum or skin’s natural oil makes skin oily. Such skin is prone to acne, so tread carefully when it comes to skincare.

If you think that having oily skin makes moisturizing unnecessary or that you need a face wash to get rid of the oil from your face, then you are mistaken! Irrespective of the type, your skin needs a certain amount of natural oil - neither too little, nor too much. So, you need a face wash to regulate oil production and hydrate it as needed.

You should ideally wash your face thrice a day - in the morning, afternoon, and before going to bed. Hence, a mild face wash containing witch hazel, aloe vera, coconut oil, or geranium would be just right. Coconut oil and aloe vera gel help remove dirt, lend enough hydration and also prevent drying of the skin.

Those with oily skin may have an acne problem because of excess oil and impurities settling in. In such cases, it’s best to use a face wash suitable for oily skin. A face wash containing antiseptic ingredients and essential oils would be helpful.

4. Dry Skin

It is the opposite of oily skin. If your skin is dry, it means there is not enough sebum production. You need a face wash that won’t dry out your skin further. A suitable face wash for dry skin is a cream-based one which contains hydrating ingredients such as glycerine, essential oils, or olive oil. In addition to removing dirt and dead cells, the face wash will also moisturize your face.

5. Combination Skin

Combination skin is a little hard to care for because while the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) tends to be oily, the remaining part of your face is more or less dry.

While the T-zone needs to be cleaned twice or thrice a day to remove excess oil, the remaining area needs cleansing only once a day. You need a face wash with hydrating elements as well as cleansing ingredients such as activated charcoal, olive oil, and aloe vera.

Remember, face washes are used to remove impurities and dead skin cells, but they can leave your skin dry, causing discomfort and more skin problems. Choosing a face wash that suits your skin type will prevent such issues and lend a healthy glow to your skin!
